Adventure Man travels to the mountainous jungles of Panama's Chagres National Park. He gets lost, gets found, sees a snake, and makes friends in his best adventure ever! Special thanks to Sr. Santos Trejos and his family, and to Caravallo, my guide and friend. Gracias especialmente a Sr. Santos Trejos y su familia, y a Caravallo, mi guía y amigo. Thanks also to Eladio Tribaldos Espinosa for being my safety net. He is a true brother, by the square and on the level. I have been asked how I chose this particular adventure. Originally, I knew I wanted to do some hiking and camping in the jungle. After a quick scan of Google Maps, Chagres National Park jumped out at me. Chagres is a wild jungle region, dominated by a small mountain range, and it's only a couple hours north of Panama City. Panama City is a busy international traffic hub, so it is relatively quick and affordable to get to. Also, Panama is a pretty stable country, and the central parts (where the park is) aren't too dangerous. The highest peak in Chagres' mountain chain is Cerro Bruja (Witch Mountain). It looks very doable on the map, comparable to Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. It's not. The rules in Panama are much different. It's way easier to get lost! But I didn't know that at the time. So, the bottom line is: I picked Cerro Bruja because it was in a rugged, mountainous jungle area close to an affordable traffic hub in a nearby, stable country. And it looked like a goal I might have a chance of achieving. Next time, I will be much better prepared, thanks to the experiences from this adventure!
