Allium leaf miner was first spotted in the UK in 2002 and has been on the rise in gardens and allotments ever since. A fine mesh can provide the alliums with some protection. However if like my garlic in 2024 you find yours bitten by these bugs you can still save the unaffected crop. I decided to process mine in this way so I could check every bulb and clove and make sure none of the bugs had hidden away. Also once the cloves are split up they are more likely to dry out so this also helped me have the garlic in an easy to use format. I could then take each 'cube' of garlic and add it in to my cooking at the appropriate time. It was super handy for saving me time peeling and crushing garlic for every meal. I tend to do quite a lot of batch cooking so this worked well. If standard sized cubes are too big for your purposes you can buy smaller ice cube trays online.
