Purification and Isolation of Cannabinoids Other than CBD from Hemp

The Federal legalization of hemp cultivation and processing in 2018 produced a rapid rise in the popularity of cannabidiol (CBD). Now other rare non-delta-9-THC cannabinoids derived from hemp have also become targets for further investigation and commercialization. Compounds such as cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabinol (CBN) may have antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant, and/or anti-cancer properties without the psychoactive effects of THC, creating an increased demand for their isolation from hemp. Known as “minor cannabinoids,” these compounds are found in lower concentrations than CBD. As a result, high-resolution purification methods such as Preparative HPLC are needed.
