Saddam claimed that Kuwait was a historical part of Iraq and had been forcibly separated from it during the British colonial rule. However, his real motives were to control Kuwait's vast oil reserves and to reduce Iraq's crippling debt caused by its eight-year war with Iran. The invasion led to the occupation of Kuwait by Iraqi forces and the Kuwaiti Royal family was forced to flee the country. The international community condemned the invasion, and a US-led coalition, consisting of forces from multiple countries, was formed to remove Iraq from Kuwait. On January 17th, 1991, Operation Desert Storm was launched, and within weeks, the coalition forces were able to push the Iraqi army out of Kuwait and restore the Kuwaiti government. The Gulf War had significant consequences, including the weakening of Saddam's regime, the imposition of UN sanctions on Iraq, and the creation of a US-led military presence in the Persian Gulf region.
