The Difference Between Metempsychosis and Reincarnation by Dave Marsland of Cardiff Theosophical Society Cardiff Theosophical Society in Wales 206 Newport Road, Cardiff CF24 1DL www.theosophycardiff.org ------------------------------------------------------------- The Difference Between Metempsychosis and Reincarnation Metempsychosis and Reincarnation are two concepts that have often been used interchangeably but there are significant differences between the two. Blavatskyan Theosophy normally uses the concept of Reincarnation. Metempsychosis is concept that originated in Hinduism and entered Greek philosophy in the teachings of Pythagoras who visited India. It is a belief that the soul of a human or any living being can be transferred from one body to another, including animals, plants and elementals. The concept was taught by Pythagoras and his followers, who believed that the soul is immortal and goes through a series of reincarnations until it reaches perfection. Reincarnation, on the other hand, is a term used usually used to describe the cycle of death and rebirth in humans. In Blavatskyan Theosophy it refer to the belief that when a person dies, their immortal higher principles, Atma-Buddhi-Manas are reborn into another human body, and this continues until the individual has reached a spiritual level at which no further lives are necessary. Theosophy regards humanity as a separate Kingdom of Nature and maintains that the human aggregate is too complex to be relegated into an animal, plant or elemental body. Metempsychosis includes the progression of the soul through any combination of living entities and as these include the animal and plant kingdoms, the idea of karma, or law of cause and effect is less important than in Reincarnation in which humans progressing from life to life are responsible for their actions in each life. ________________________________ The first Theosophical Society was founded in New York on November 17th 1875 by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, William Quan Judge and others.
