I am Dr. Pascual de Santis. I'm an endocrinologist, and I work for Baptist Health South Florida. [What is your area of expertise?] Pascual de Santis: Endocrinology is a specialty of hormones. We deal with any mistakes in hormone production in the body. It's mainly a specialty that deals with hormones and metabolism in general. [Why did you choose your specialty?] Pascual de Santis: I like research a lot. Endocrinology is a specialty that combines really well both clinical and basic sciences. In other words, you can apply basic knowledge into clinical practice. You can see how things work a lot. That's one of my hooks to endocrine. [What advice do you give your patients?] Pascual de Santis: If there was a piece of advice that I could give my patients that would be, try to live a healthy lifestyle. A lot of the conditions that I see are the result of a combination of genetic predisposition or also environmental issues. I think a lot of the diseases that we see could be prevented. [What role does empathy play in patient care?] Pascual de Santis: Sometimes you have to take a little time to listen to whatever complaints that may not be related directly to what you're dealing with, but it can actually impact what you're dealing with. Once in a while, you find yourself in one of those clinic visits, just counseling people regarding emotional things rather than talking about the blood sugars, but that's really necessary to really improve in this other aspect.
