The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is, on paper, a competitor to both the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Sea-Dweller. In reality, the Planet Ocean is a better value than either and succeeds on its own merits. Redesigned for 2016, the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M as featured in today’s show is a 43.5mm stainless steel dive watch with world class capabilities. The face-value 600-meter depth rating is tested to 125% rated capacity as part of Omega’s compliance with the ISO 6425 definition of a diving watch. A helium escape valve, which is not available on a Submariner, permits saturation divers to surface without sustaining damage to their watches. Omega fits the Planet Ocean 600M with a substantial three-link bracelet with a deployant clasp. The clasp releases by means of twin triggers. Each clasp includes both a traditional fold-out diving suit extension and a pushbutton slider that permits 9.6mm of incremental adjustment. All removable links in the bracelet are fixed with screws, and the bracelet can be sized with standard jeweler’s screwdrivers. Omega’s Planet Ocean dial is one of its best. The dial base is polished back ceramic for beauty and durability. Hands and hour indices are rhodium-plated white gold. Omega uses blue super luminova for most of the dial, but the critical minute hand and bezel index are green for easy reading while diving below sea surface light. A unidirectional diving bezel operates with 120-click action, and it is rendered scratch resistant with a black ceramic insert. Unlike Rolex dive watches, the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M includes a sapphire display caseback. Caliber 8900 is an automatic Master Chronometer caliber certified using an ISO 3159-based regimen of testes developed with the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology. In addition to meeting the same timing standards as the COSC Swiss chronometer test, the Master Chronometer testing involves evaluating a fully cased watch for water resistance, magnetic resistance, shock resistance, power reserve, and automatic winding effectiveness. Caliber 8900 includes two mainspring barrels and a power reserve of 60 hours. The Co-Axial escapement minimizes friction and realizes inventor George Daniels’ vision for improved power reserve, improved chronometry, and reduced maintenance requirements. Durability is ensured by a winding rotor on a ball bearing mount, a full balance bridge, and a free-sprung balance. The hairspring is an antimagnetic Omega Si14 unit.
