Bydgoszcz in Poland is a bustling city of some one third of a million people. When Poland became independent in 1919, Bydgoszcz became part of that country. The population was mixed, as a general rule, the German language predominated in the larger towns whilst Polish was the language of the countryside. The lands to the east of the Elbe river were generally in the hands of large landowners and even this far east, those large landowners tended to be, but were not always, German speakers. The policy of the government of the Second German Reich had been to purchase land from Polish landowners and then sell it to Germans. One such landowner was the Boden family who owned land in the region of Goncarzewy between the modern towns of Bydgoszcz and Nakło nad Notecią. Hans Boden and his wife Elfriede, née Popp had five children, one of whom, born on 9 September 1893 was Margarete who was later to become the wife of the Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler Margarete Boden, called Marga by her few friends, went to school in Bydgoszcz, then called Bromberg, which she completed in 1909. She then trained as a nurse, her training being somewhat delayed by the war but nevertheless she managed to complete it during the conflict. She was employed at a hospital run by the German Red Cross. She got married but the marriage was unsuccessful and a divorce was arranged. There were no children and no problems. Her father, wanting to better his daughter, now Margarete Siegroth, arranged for her to become a partner in a private clinic in Berlin and it would appear that the business was quite successful. It is not clear where Margarete Siegroth met Heinrich Himmler. It could have been in Bad Reichenhall near Berchtesgaden in December 1926 or in September 1927 in Sulzbach which is around 50km to the east of Nuremberg. She was impressed by Heinrich Himmler and they wrote to each other regularly with Himmler romantically sending her anti Semitic literature. A large number of letters between the two turned up in 2014 and experts agree that they are unquestionably genuine. We also now a lot about her from the diary that she kept from 1937 to 1945 as well as the baby diary about their daughter. The blonde and blue-eyed nurse corresponded to Himmler's ideal for women. Both also shared an interest in homeopathy , medicinal herbs and agriculture. She had been happy to take a Jewish business partner when her father had advanced her the money to make the purchase of the clinic but either through the influence of Himmler or other sources she became an avid anti-Semite. In a letter to Himmler dated 22 June 1928, she made disparaging comments about the co-owner of the private clinic, the gynecologist and surgeon Bernhard Hauschildt: “This Hauschildt! A Jew remains a Jew!” After several meetings at their respective places of residence, both decided to get married in February 1928. Himmler initially had difficulty revealing this relationship to his parents because his future bride was divorced, seven years older and Protestant. The civil wedding took place on 3 July 1928 in Berlin-Schöneberg , the church wedding in Zepernick , Brandenburg . The family of Himmler was so disgusted at his choice of bride that they did not attend the wedding, the witnesses were the bride's father and brother. Ultimately, Himmler's parents accepted his decision, but his wife's relationship with the Himmler family remained distant. Gebhard Ludwig Himmler , Heinrich Himmler's brother, later characterized her as a "cold, hard woman who did not radiate any comfort, was highly nervous and complained all too often", but who "was an exemplary housewife" and "always stood by her husband’s side”. On 1 August 1928, Margarete Himmler joined the NSDAP ( membership number 97.252). After the marriage, she sold her share in the private clinic for 12,000 Reichsmarks . She moved from Berlin to Waldtrudering near Munich, where the couple purchased a house with the proceeds from the sale of the clinic. The couple unsuccessfully tried to supplement Himmler's low income as a party employee by selling their own agricultural products and ran a chicken farm. What is clear is that it was thanks to the money from her family that allowed Heinrich Himmler to continue his career in the Nazi Party and this must have caused her a lot of bitterness towards him later. A daughter, was born on 8 August 1929 in Munich. Gudrun Margarete Elfriede Emma Anna was 3625 grams and 54 centimeters at birth. “Blonde hair, with blue eyes and a rosy little nose,” the mother wrote in the baby journal. “She lay peacefully in front of me.” After the caesarean section, she had to stay in the hospital for three weeks.
