This is the story of a movement created by unlikely allies. One that changed mining, and Britain, forever. In 1984, the National Union of Mineworkers walked out in protest of pit closures that threatened not just jobs, but entire communities. What followed became one of the most defining labour movements in modern history. Designing Solidarity is a five-part story told through the eyes of those who lived it, built it, and carried it forward — miners, women, and LGBTQIA+ allies who turned struggle into connection and created a legacy that still shapes us today. --- Part One: Solidarity The strike begins at Cortonwood Colliery in South Yorkshire. What starts as a local protest becomes a national movement — and the first spark of unexpected alliances. Part Two: Persistence As miners take to the picket lines, women hold the movement together. In community halls and kitchens, they feed families, organize relief funds, and redefine what leadership looks like. Three: Pride Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) join the fight. An unlikely friendship forms between the LGBTQIA+ community and mining families, reshaping the meaning of solidarity. Part Four: Resilience The strike ends, but the story continues. From banners to brand, from protest art to cultural heritage, the movement’s spirit is reclaimed through creativity, storytelling, and design. Part Five: Legacy The mines closed, but the lessons endured. Communities rebuilt themselves through cooperatives, renewable energy projects, and education. Women found independence and purpose. LGSM’s alliance with the miners helped advance LGBTQ+ rights across Britain. What began as resistance became renewal. The 1984–85 UK Miners’ Strike reminds us that solidarity is built, not given. When we mine together, we rise together. 🎬 A Mine Like a Woman production
