There is nothing toxic that you can confuse for Nettles (Urtica dioica) in the UK, but the closest lookalikes are what are collectively known as “dead nettles”, in the Lamium genus, and are so called because the sting is “dead”, meaning they look like nettles but don’t sting you! There are a few types but here I focus on the White Dead Nettle (Lamium album) which is a sting-free edible plant that’s easy to mistake for stinging nettles, especially before it flowers, but is safe to eat, and therefore a harmless mistake to make! In this video, I show you how to identify this brilliant wild edible, explain how it differs from its stinging cousin, and share why the sweet-tasting flowers are my favourite part. A perfect plant for beginner foragers, and incredibly common too. #deadnettles #wildfood #foraging #bushcraft
