Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Allegretto in C minor, D.915 (1827) Recorded December 3, 2021 ~~ Schubert’s Allegretto in C Minor, D. 915, is a brief yet deeply expressive work, composed in 1827, just a year before his death. Though it carries the title Allegretto, its character is more elegiac than lighthearted—a piece filled with quiet resignation and intimate poetry. The opening theme unfolds with a gentle but persistent melancholy, its sighing phrases tinged with longing. A more lyrical secondary idea briefly brightens the landscape, yet even here, Schubert’s harmonic turns evoke a sense of wistful reflection. As the piece progresses, echoes of Beethovenian drama emerge, but always softened by Schubert’s unique sensitivity to color and shading. The music fades away as it began—an unanswered question, a thought left hanging in the air. Though small in scale, the Allegretto encapsulates Schubert’s gift for expressing entire worlds of emotion in the span of a few minutes.
