First time air-layering an Alocasia. The plant was doing well but as Alocasias mature and lose their lower leaves they leave behind a long bare stem (rhizome). I didn't want to simply bury the exposed stem in a larger pot and I wanted to maintain the mature size of the leaves and rhizome, so I thought I'd try air-layering instead. I wrapped the stem nearest to the bottom leaves in sphagnum moss and held in place with cling wrap and twist ties. The roots formed much more quickly than I expected (about a week and a half). After I chopped it I let the cut callous over for a couple days before potting it up in soil. Update: two weeks later and the plant seems to be doing well. Hasn't even lost any leaves! I was expecting to lose at least one or two.
