The popular saying claims that nice guys always finish last. That may be true, depending on how you define the terms of winning and losing. If the winner is the one who gains the maximum advantage for himself, then the nice guy - the righteous man who seeks the advantage of others - will lose every time. But take care that you don't seek your own advantage at the expense of the righteous man. The Sayings of the Wise give us this warning in Proverbs 24, verses 15-16: 15 Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place; 16 for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes. The righteous man is a friend to all, so why would anyone victimize him? Why steal the shirt off the back of someone who would willingly give it to you? Again, it depends on how you define winning and losing. Just remember that the righteous man is also a friend of God, and those who oppose a righteous man will find themselves in opposition to the Lord. As you contemplate how you define the terms of winning and losing, consider the Saying of the Wise above and also this saying of Jesus Christ in John 16, verse 33: 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This world is full of trouble. Seek the peace of God instead. Rather than pursuing victory "in" this world, seek a victory "over" this world. Then, like Jesus Christ and the righteous man in our Proverb, you will rise again and overcome the world. This is another episode in the series entitled, "The Sayings of the Wise." Join father and son, Timothy and Caleb, while they explore the wisest sayings of the ancient world as recorded in the book of Proverbs.
