Presented By: Brock Hedegaard, University of Minnesota Duluth Concrete slab-span bridges are well-suited for short span crossings. Deterioration of these bridges may manifest as longitudinal and transverse cracking, spalling, and rebar corrosion. Two slab-span bridges with operating ratings less than unity were field tested and modeled to quantify their flexural distribution of live loads and update their rating factors. Live load testing performed on these bridges provided information for finite element model development and validation. Three-dimensional finite element models were built for linear, uncracked conditions and nonlinear conditions with different levels of cracking as observed in the field. Furthermore, simplified two-dimensional plate models with different stiffnesses in the longitudinal and transverse directions were constructed. These simplified models adequately captured live load distribution of the deteriorated bridges. Practical guidance on constructing and applying these simplified models was developed to aid in future load rating of slab span bridges.
