Attempts to make AI explainable can often be as opaque as the systems they are attempting to make transparent. This ethnographic work shows how technical solutions to opening up black box AI led to a lot of interpretive work within an interdisciplinary team creating AI for healthcare, which itself was opaque due to the social work involved. This is part of ECR lunchtime sessions organised by Multiple Long-Term Conditions Research Support Facility (AIM RSF) The AI for Multiple Long-term Conditions Research Support Facility (AIM RSF) is based at The Alan Turing Institute, in partnership with Swansea University and the University of Edinburgh. The RSF offers AI and advanced data science expertise and support to the eight research consortia, as part of a broader £23M investment in multiple long-term conditions research (the AIM Programme).
