It's what your movie or show will tell, share, teach its audience. Clarifying, sharpening, and deepening the impact of the theme is one of the most important aspects of revising a screenplay. In this video, I go over 5 common mistakes that screenwriters make in first drafts (myself included!) when it comes to the theme of the story. Would love to read and reply to your comments and questions on this one. ⚠️ Warning: Don't get all heady and intellectual about it when it comes to theme of your story. People don't want movies or shows because they're looking for a philosophy lecture. People want to be entertained and moved (rightly so!). It's your job as a screenwriter to firstly, have fun, secondly, feel feelings! If you're moved by your story, your readers will be too. ✍️ I rarely ever know what my script is about until I've written my first draft. I follow feelings, inspiration, intuition, and let the story unfold and surprise. Once I have a finished first draft (sometimes it happens sooner, if I'm lucky), I then step back to discover and identify the theme that organically emerged. 🛠️ Having clarified the theme for myself, I go back through the draft and fix the problems that I describe in this video.
