Aaleyah Belle Needs Your Help Now!

On September 2nd, 2023 Aaleyah Belle went down in pain with suspected colic. The vet was immediately contacted and once she arrived, and passed a tube, she determined that Aaleyah required hospitalization. As we were loading Aaleyah, Chloe became stressed so much so that I was worried Chloe, too, might colic. I made the decision, with a terrible migraine, to stay at the farm while Jenny followed Bob and Aaleyah to the hospital. I gave Chloe a sedative to calm her and about forty-five minutes later, she walked off with Peaches. Dr. Hughes called after assessing Aaleyah Belle at the hospital and said the issue could likely be managed medically. They would treat Aaleyah and give her time. However, Jenny called to ask if I could go to the hospital sooner than later. My migraine was better, Chloe settled down, and I was very concerned, so off to the hospital I went. Upon seeing Aaleyah, and the pain she was in, it was clear she needed surgery but it was reassuring to see the determination to overcome in her eyes. After a discussion with Dr. Hughes, I asked that Aaleyah be taken into surgery immediately – a decision which literally, saved her life. Her colon had been displaced but the bigger issue was an epiploic foramen entrapment. There is a small slit next to the liver and stomach and about 6' of the small intestine had become entrapped in that slit. Blood supply had been cut off but the intestine was not dead. Dr. Hughes opted to put back the section of small intestine where it belonged versus resecting it. Afterwards, she saw the intestine moving and ‘coming back to life.’. After recovering at the hospital for a few days, Aaleyah returned to the rescue where she continues to recover. Why is Aaleyah Belle so very special. Why? Read on… On May 3rd, 2008 a determined steel-gray 3 year-old Thoroughbred filly named Eight Belles ran in the Kentucky Derby against 19 colts. Against the odds, Eight Belles finished second, following the winner, Big Brown. Sadly, within seconds of crossing the finish line, Eight Belles broke down and had to be euthanized. On this same day, I received a phone call from someone expressing concern about a mare and filly that were going to be shot by the owners. A registered Thoroughbred mare named ‘Currently Sue,’ had foaled in the early morning hours and her filly had wry nose syndrome which prevented her from nursing. The mare had given her baby all the nourishment she could in utero, as she, herself, was merely skin on bones and simply had no milk to offer her baby even if the baby could nurse. I contacted the owner to see if they would release them and they were happy to oblige. Time was of the essence – the foal had not received vital colostrum needed after birth, thus making her chances of survival slim. Upon picking them up to take them to the rescue where a vet would be waiting, I could see wonderment and determination in the eyes of the precious filly which gave me hope. We named the filly, who would have to overcome immeasurable odds in order to survive, ‘Aaleyah Belle’ in memory of Eight Belles. We loving called the mare ‘Momma Sue.’ Both were promptly vetted and Aaleyah received plasma and colostrum. Thankfully, Aaleyah could drink from a bottle and Momma Sue was put on a re-feeding program. Aaleyah Belle grew stronger and went to the UF for surgery to correct her wry nose which would improve her quality of life. Surgery went well but a few days later, Aaleyah was diagnosed with a rotavirus and had to be put into QT with Momma Sue. A couple of days later, Aaleyah managed to get sutures out and milk was coming out of her nose, so the next day, she had to go back into surgery. Skin was grafted from inside Aaleyah’s lip to the middle of her soft palate. A couple of days later, she still tested positive for rotavirus and yet another virus. The UF care team felt it best to send Momma Sue and Aaleyah back to the farm where the possibility of Aaleyah picking up any other bug would be less than staying at the hospital. As soon as Aaleyah’s legs hit the ground in our QT paddock, she ran around while Momma Sue opted to stop, drop, and roll in the sand before running along with her daughter. They were happy to be back. About 3 weeks later, the vet determined all was good. Momma Sue and Aaleyah were able to go out with the herd. As Aaleyah grew stronger, her breathing became easier, she started kicking up her heels more and loved to show off her special “Cricket Dance." Aaleyah Belle has, from the moment we met her, been a spirited girl determined to overcome the odds and to never give up. She loves life and loves to give sloppy kisses to anyone. Aaleyah Belle’s motto: “Life is about determination. Don’t give up because of the obstacles. Regardless of what obstacles face you, just keep going! Go through, go around, jump over, or crawl under – but never give up!” Please help with her surgery bill. Donations are tax deductible. Visit www.bhfer.org. Thank you!
