The First Intifada, or “uprising” in Arabic, occurred in December 1987 following a deadly traffic collision between an IDF vehicle and a Palestinian car. The First Intifada’s violence led many Israelis, including Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, to conclude that Israel could not continue to forcefully suppress Palestinian revolts but should look for ways to facilitate peace. This significant decision led to the 1993 Oslo Accords. In the years after the Oslo Accords, a lack of progress in peace negotiations at the 2000 Camp David Summit and Israeli PM Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount (AKA al Haram al Sharif, the third-holiest site in Islam) catalyzed the already-escalating violence towards a Second Intifada, which erupted in September 2000. The escalation, which lasted until February of 2005, led Israel to build a security fence to prevent Palestinian terrorists from freely entering Israel. The Second Intifada ended with the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit of 2005, at which Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli PM Ariel Sharon agreed to a ceasefire. Unveiling hidden injustices and promoting human rights is our driving force and main passion.
