3 “I will give you every place where you SET YOUR FOOT, as I promised Moses…5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to INHERIT the LAND I swore to their ancestors to give them.” - Joshua 1:3,5-6 (NIV) We’ve marched through this entire book—we crossed the Jordan with courage, marched in obedience bringing down Jericho, ambushed Ai after removing hidden sin, claimed our inheritance that is rightfully ours, and now finally, it’s time to build our homes as we battle for our families. There has to be a WHY behind the WAR: it’s FAMILY. Joshua didn’t just lead Israel into victory to claim land—he led them into victory to create LEGACY. We’re not just fighting BATTLES—we’re fighting for our FAMILIES and future generations. HOW TO FIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY AND LEAVE A LEGACY: 1. CHOOSE DAILY, WHO YOU WILL SERVE Legacy starts with a decision. Every family needs a spiritual leader who chooses God daily. 15 But if you refuse to SERVE THE LORD, then CHOOSE whom you will SERVE. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will SERVE THE LORD.” - Joshua 24:15 (NLT) • Make the Lord the focus and foundation of your home; and not just a visiting guest. • Your household culture is shaped by the choices you consistently make, not the ones you occasionally feel. • Lead your family in prayer, devotion, and service; Legacy is built by your daily decisions, not on fleeting emotions. • What your children remember won’t be what you said, but what you prioritized. What decisions are you making to help establish your family’s spiritual direction and success? 2. CONFRONT THE IDOLS THAT COMPETE FOR YOUR HEART Legacy is built on the foundation of Loyalty: Loyalty to God, Loyalty to His Word, Loyalty to your family’s legacy. Loyalty to the future generations who will walk on the paths you pave today. 23 “All right then,” Joshua said, “DESTROY THE IDOLS among you, and turn your HEARTS to the Lord, the God of Israel.” - Joshua 24:23 (NLT) • Before our family legacy is passed down, all our idols must be cast down and destroyed. • An idol is anything we trust, love, or fear more than God; like success, money, fame, beauty, or power • What you tolerate today becomes what your children accept tomorrow. What “idols” need to be removed from your life so your children can see your example and faith in God? 3. COMMIT TO GOD’S COVENANT & CHANGE YOUR FAMILY’S CULTURE! Legacy begins with leadership. What we commit to today will shape the destiny of those who follow us. 25 So Joshua made a COVENANT with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the decrees and regulations of the Lord. 26 Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions [TLV: “in the scroll of the Torah of God”]. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the Lord.” - Joshua 24:25-26 (NLT) 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts [NLT: “COMMIT YOURSELVES wholeheartedly to these commands”]. 7 IMPRESS THEM on your CHILDREN. Talk about them when you SIT AT HOME and when you WALK ALONG THE ROAD, when you LIE DOWN and when you GET UP. - Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (NIV) • The character you display becomes the culture you create. • Don’t just say you love God—show your family with your example, your words, and your worship. • What you normalize in your home becomes your family’s spiritual culture and future. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your CULTURE that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the CULTURE around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. - Romans 12:2 (MSG) COMMIT YOUR FUTURE to the Lord. Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf. - Psalm 37:5 (NET) PERSONAL PRAYER CHALLENGE: “I declare that my homes will SERVE THE LORD! I not just FIGHT for my victory, but for all future generations. My house will be known as a family of faith, with people of purpose, who are builders of a GODLY LEGACY. In Jesus’ name—Amen!”
