1. Types of Anesthesia General anesthesia → You are completely unconscious. Regional anesthesia → Only part of your body is numbed (e.g., spinal or epidural). Local anesthesia → A small, specific area is numbed (e.g., dental procedures). 2. General Anesthesia (Unconsciousness) General anesthetics (e.g., propofol, sevoflurane) act mainly on the central nervous system. They increase the activity of GABA (the brain’s main “inhibitory” neurotransmitter). This reduces brain activity and prevents signals between nerve cells from firing normally. At the same time, they may block excitatory neurotransmitters (like glutamate). Result: Loss of consciousness Loss of sensation (no pain) Loss of reflexes Relaxed muscles 3. Regional & Local Anesthesia Local anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine) work by blocking sodium channels in nerve cells. Normally, sodium ions flow in and out of nerve cells to create electrical signals (action potentials). By blocking these channels, anesthetics stop pain signals from traveling to the brain. Result: You stay awake, but the specific area feels numb. 4. Balanced Anesthesia In surgery, anesthesiologists often use a combination: Hypnotics → make you unconscious Analgesics (opioids) → block pain Muscle relaxants → prevent movement Inhaled agents / IV drugs → maintain unconsciousness This multimodal approach allows lower doses of each drug, reducing side effects. 5. How the Body Recovers Once the drugs wear off (or are stopped), nerve communication restarts. The brain regains consciousness, and sensations return gradually. Anesthesiologists carefully monitor vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen) to make sure recovery is safe.
