Álvaro Castagnet was born in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1954 and had already studied drawing and painting at the School of Fine Arts and in the workshop of Miguel Ángel Pareja when he emigrated to Australia following a love, and the dream of perfecting himself in watercolor, a technique in which the Australian school, along with the English and American schools, was a reference in the world of plastic arts. Upon returning to Montevideo, he met Ana María in Punta del Este, an architect from Córdoba who supports him in the management and logistics involved in spending 10 out of 12 months of the year traveling the world, coordinating events where Álvaro interacts with professional and amateur artists, sheikhs, businesspeople, and students in all corners of the globe. In the 1980s, they settled in Australia for almost 20 years, and returned to Uruguay with their two young children. In Montevideo, his routine revolves around his studio in the Mercado del Puerto area of the Old City, and his travels—visiting biennials, serving as a jury member for competitions, giving masterclasses, and leading workshops—begin and end (for now) in his hometown. Another anchor point, if not for domestic life (which is almost entirely absent from his routine), then for a break in his constant whirlwind of activity, is his refuge in Colonia del Sacramento. His travels also include visits to his children, currently living in Australia, or they seek out destinations in between where they can enjoy time as a family. Gastón, the eldest, is following in his footsteps but in the field of graffiti and typographic illustration, while Calvin studies Economics. In the last year alone, they have been found in places like Girona, Malta, Milan, Singapore, Dubai, China, Vietnam, Russia, Estonia, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and an endless list of destinations where they are received with the status of an illustrious figure, the professional respect of a Master, and the media treatment of a rockstar, fueled by pure talent and charisma to interact with people and cameras.
