The Druids Temple is located near Ilton, a small village in North Yorkshire just 3 miles southwest of Masham. It is the principal settlement in the civil parish Ilton cum Pott, in Harrogate district. the estimated population as of 2015 was estimated at 50. The Druids Temple is a replica of Stonehenge that was built by William Danby of nearby Swinton Park, in about 1800. During a time of agricultural depression and high unemployment, Danby hired local men to help construct the replica of Stonehenge, working at a rate of 1 shilling a day. The result is a folly with a national reputation. Danby tried to hire a silent druidic hermit to fulfill a seven year contract on the site. Although several tried, nobody succeeded for the promised annuity. The folly is still owned by the Swinton estate. ***(Silent Druidic Hermit were people encouraged to live alone in purpose built hermitages, follies, grottos or rockeries on the estate of wealthy landowners during the 18th century. Such hermits would be encouraged to remain permanently on site, where they would be fed, cared for, consulted for advice and viewed for entertainment.)
