The beautiful, magnificent, incredibly important bovine placenta!! I argue that people need to be more connected to REAL LIFE - thus why I am going to share all about cow placenta. Cows and humans do not have the same type of placenta shape or attachments Cows have cotyledonary placentation - which is basically like polka-dot areas where the placenta (calf side) is attached to the uterus (cow side). Humans on the other hand have just one site of attachment, called discoid placentation. Another difference between humans and cows is how many layers they have between fetal and maternal blood. Cows are classified as "epitheliochorial" - which means they have 3 layers between the two different blood supplies. Humans only have 1 layer, so they are "hemochorial". This difference becomes key when we talk about the importance of colostrum (the first milk) and how much immunity is passed from the mom to the baby. In humans, there is substantial transfer of immunoglobulins from the mom's blood to the baby's blood prior to birth. In contrast, there is no transfer of immunoglobulins across the placenta in animals like cattle, sheep, horses and pigs. In those species, the neonate is essentially devoid of circulating antibodies until it absorbs them from colostrum (first milk). If you ever have a reproductive failure in your herd and want to send in samples for diagnostic testing, make sure to include the placenta AND fetus if possible!! (Make sure to wear gloves while collecting too!) Earlier this week I posted a video about the 3 stages of calving and I'm almost 100% certain that while that video was uploading this cow was calving. Check out that video if you want to learn more about what happens before the placenta comes out! (Citation: Colorado State Repro Site)
