Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disorder of the synovium of the joint which causes joint pain and degeneration if left untreated. It can occur in a number of different joints in the human body, but most commonly occurs at the hip. Synovial chondromatosis leads to the creation of loose bodies of cartilage alone or in combination with bone (calcification). The primary treatment is removal of synovium, loose bodies, and abnormal calcifications, either through an open or arthroscopic technique, with the goal of removing as much of the synovium as possible to prevent recurrence. The synovium is removed from the center of the joint as well as from the peripheral area, particularly around the femoral head and neck area.
