Footnote (Please read if you are not Amharic speaker) - I would like to add the following brief note for the benefit of viewers who do not understand the Amharic language in which the dialogue between the two of us took place and the lyrics of his songs are said. Ato (Mr) Alemayehu Fanta and I met for the first time about 20 years ago in London. I was privileged to interview him regarding his career as a respectable singer of Ethiopian traditional music and music teacher at Yared School of Music. He was willing to share his wealth of knowledge on the subject and allowed me to record his melodies and share them with his fans at home and overseas. However, there had been no communication between us except a few telephone call exchanges soon after he returned back to Ethiopia. I carried on struggling to earn my daily bread, still living where he met and left me; and always wishing to get another chance to meet and catch up with him. My dream and effort materialised during my recent visit to Ethiopia as I managed to get in touch with him and shared happy memories of our brief encounter in London; and what we both are up to at the moment. It gives me a great pleasure to share the outcome of this meeting with his fans; and my beloved subscribers and occasional visitors of my YouTube Channel.. Born many winters ago to Ethiopian parents, a father who was an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewhedo church priest and a housewife mother, in Wollo Province, famous for being home for landmarks of global dimension like Lalibela and as the birthplace of many famous traditional singers, Ato Alemayehu served as a deacon in his local church for about 6 years before he was cherry picked among many young people of his age who were aspiring to move away from the rural areas, looking for a better life, and to join 'The Hager Fiker' Theatre around 1957/8 (1950 Ethiopian Calendar). Ten years later, he became one of the first Ethiopian traditional music teachers employed at the modern Yared Music School which was established to produce young Ethiopian musicians who study international music alongside the traditional one and get a qualification. He told me he had taught for 26 years at the time we met, and I was under the impression that he had retired. Being surprised to find him still teaching at the same School, now part of the Addis Ababa University, I asked him why it was so. Ato Alemayehu, still as energetic and enthusiastic as ever, told me he has joined the School again on contract basis and continued imparting his knowledge and producing Ethiopian musicians who understand their own musical heritage as they expand their horizon of musical knowledge that the classical and modern world has to offer. With over 40 years of teaching experience under his belt, and mesmerising voice and high level of skills in playing various musical instruments, Ato Alemayeh has extensively travelled around the world with different Ethiopian leaders and with various musical groups and presented the rich Ethiopian musical heritage -- musical notes and instruments - to different audience and feels proud about it. When I asked him what would it be the one and most important thing he will ask for if someone promises to provide him without any hesitation, he replied to me with the typical Ethiopian modesty, that he would ask for nothing more except thanking them for being his fan and taking interest in his music and express their appreciation in such great words of generosity. It is only when I asked him if has any message to send to his fellow Ethiopians at home and around the world, he politely but assertively added that he would be the happiest person on earth if some benevolent individual or organisation sponsors him to realise his dream to carry out an international tour to share the unique and rich Ethiopian musical tradition with Ethiopians and other music lovers around the world.
