Porsche Cayman Boxster, How to drain and refill your engine oil and replace the oil filter. In this video I demonstrate how to do an oil and filter change yourself. This is on the gen 2 Cayman or Boxster, model years 2009 2010 2011 & 2012. It's very straight forward and anyone who's fairly confident with the spanners can do this job. Tools Required: Metric Hex Bit Socket 8mm 3/8 Inch Drive Extension Set 74mm 14 Flute Oil Filter Socket Torque Wrench - min 20nm - 100nm Small flat blade screwdriver Trolly jack and axle stands, Wheel Chocks etc Oil Drain Pan, min 8 litre Capacity Disposable Gloves Parts Required: Mobil 1 0W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 8 litres required MAHLE Original Engine Oil Filter - P/N: OX 366D Aluminium Oil Drain Plug x1 P/N: 90012310630 Torque Specs & Fluid Capacities: Oil drain plug: 50Nm - 37 ft-lbs Oil filter cap: 25Nm - 19 ft-lbs Engine oil capacity: 7.75 litres STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS: Step 1: Prepare your vehicle and work area. Starting with a cold engine, take your car for a 5 minute drive to warm up the oil. This will help the oil drain more easily. Park your car on a level surface. Step 2: Raise the vehicle If extra clearance is needed, raise the vehicle using either vehicle ramps or jack stands. Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels to prevent the car from rolling. Avoid just jacking up the rear. raise all four corners to ensure the vehicle is level. if anything, it would be better if its slightly higher at the front, so the oil will drain towards the rear. Step 3: Draining the oil Start by opening the rear storage compartment and unscrewing the oil fill cap, which will help the engine oil drain more easily. Get under the car and place the drain pan under oil drain plug. Remove the oil drain plug using an 8mm hex socket and ratchet; be sure to grab it so it doesn’t fall into the drain pan.​​ Let the oil drain for 15 minutes or until its dripping slowly. Step 4: Re-install the oil drain plug After allowing the oil to drain, re-install the oil drain plug along with a brand new crush washer; if you do not use a new crush washer, the engine oil will likely leak! Tighten the oil drain plug with new crush washer to 50Nm - 37 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. Note: While Porsche recommends using a new oil drain plug, you can re-use your old one as long as it is in good condition and you use a new crush washer.​ Step 5: Replace the engine oil filter You can do this while the oil is draining if you have another drain pan. Use a 74mm oil filter socket, suitable length extension, and ratchet to remove the oil filter cap which is located just behind the oil pan toward the rear of the car on the left hand side. Replace the o-ring seal on the oil filter cap with a new one, which should be included with the new oil filter. You need to purchase it separately if you get your filter directly from Porsche. Dab some new engine oil around the o-ring to help create a leak-free seal and prevent it from snagging. Place the new oil filter into the oil filter cap. Fill the oil filter cap with new oil; this will help lube the engine faster on initial start-up. Re-install the oil filter and cap; torque the oil filter cap to 25Nm - 19 ft-lbs. Step 6: Add new engine oil To prevent from overfilling your engine oil, start by adding 6.5 - 7 litres. Ensure there are no engine oil leaks. Put the oil cap back on before running the engine. If you raised your vehicle, lower it back down so it sits level. Step 7: checking the oil level You have to use the onboard computer on the dash to measure the engine oil level. The is no manual dipstick and no way of measuring with one like on some cars. Start engine and allow it to warm up. Recommend not to drive at this stage, good opportunity to tidy up some of the mess you have made 🙂 Most important thing is to have the vehicle on a level surface. a slight incline will give a higher oil level reading while a decline will show a lower level. When the car is sufficiently warm, (80c) use the onboard computer to measure the oil level by selecting “Oil” on your gauge cluster, using the function stalk. The engine has to be running. The upper line of the digital oil level reading is the max.​​​ The lower line of the digital oil level reading is the minimum. Each increment represents a little less than half a litre, 500ml or 0.42 quarts.
