Update1: A local Pro here has giving me his nutrition guidelines for the days leading up to the race. I think it is very sound advice and here it is: "For me, starting 2 days before, so Friday (for traditional race) I switch gears. I go from a healthy, balanced diet, to a diet where I generate 70-80% of my calories from carbs. This is important. Proteins will do you zero good on race day. Carb loading is a real thing, and it starts way before the night before. Basically, for 2 days, I'm eating nothing but fruit, oatmeal, rice, potatoes, breads, etc. I will gain upwards of 8 pounds in 2 days, and lose it all on Sunday. I shoot for pizza for dinner Friday and pasta for dinner Saturday. Race morning, I eat about as much food as I can choke down four hours before start time. Then, an hour before start time I'll have a naked fruit smoothie, pb&j and a banana. Food is so important for racers. I burn 1000-1200 calories per hour while racing. So, preparation is vital." Thank you Richard for your input. Update2: Pickle Juice and Pedialyte are two popular drinks for pre-race or mid-race. They are high in electrolytes without a whole lot of sugar. It is an acquired taste, but eventually you will like it. Hydration is very important when it comes to any endurance activity. Today I talk about some of the steps I take to ensure that I still have some energy left at the end of a race. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
