Today, I’m walking you through my foolproof method for planting collard greens in seed trays so you can enjoy strong, healthy plants right from the start. ✅ Step 1 – Prep the Soil I sifted my potting soil mix to remove all the wood chips. This is important because big chunks can block the tiny seeds from sprouting. A fine, fluffy soil mix gives your seeds the best start. ✅ Step 2 – Plant the Seeds Collard seeds are small, so instead of just one, I plant 2–3 seeds per cell. This gives you a much better chance of filling every tray with a plant. Later, you can thin them out to the strongest seedling. ✅ Step 3 – Cover with Vermiculite Instead of covering the seeds with heavy soil, I use a layer of vermiculite. This is a little hack I love because it’s so light that seedlings can push right through it. It also holds moisture really well, giving seeds the best chance to germinate. ✅ Step 4 – Water the Right Way After planting, I lightly spray water over the top to moisten the seeds. This starts the germination process without washing them too deep into the soil. ✅ Step 5 – Prevent Fungus Naturally Before fungus ever becomes a problem, I sprinkle a thin layer of ground cinnamon across the tray. Cinnamon has natural anti-fungal properties that help keep damping-off disease away—a common issue when starting seeds indoors. ✅ Step 6 – Provide Good Light Once the seeds sprout, make sure your grow lights are ready! Collard seedlings need strong light right away. Without enough light, they’ll become “leggy”—that means tall, thin, and weak because they’re stretching for light. Leggy seedlings often fall over or fail to thrive, so keeping the light close (but not touching) is key. 🌟 Extra Tips for Success Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Use a humidity dome if you have one—it keeps conditions steady for germination. Thin seedlings by snipping at the base with scissors instead of pulling, to avoid disturbing roots. Rotate trays if using window light, so seedlings grow straight instead of leaning. With this method, you’ll have strong, healthy collard greens that are ready to transplant into the garden when the time comes!
