Set during the nineteenth century, 'The Canary' follows protagonist Florence, who, following the sinking of a transport vessel, is set adrift on the open ocean. With little but a wooden lifeboat and caged canary beside her, Florence must find the strength to defy the social standards of her time; utilizing her own determination to endure the vast ocean and to try to survive the hostile Australian wilderness. An independent project created by only 4 people, 'The Canary' is a tale of persistence, self-exploration and self acceptance, from both the characters and those who brought the film to life. A Western Australian film created by Emilie Lowe when she was 21 years old, The Canary only had a budget $10,00, but the tiny team worked hard to create captivating visuals and an evocative story line. With a 2 hour run time, this is Salt and Honey Production’s first feature film, shot in WA and Perth throughout 2021-2024. Written and directed by dyslexic first-time feature film maker Emilie Lowe, with cinematography by legally blind Peter Renzullo and scoring by WA’s Nicholas Gardiner. The Film has won numerous awards in the international film festival circuit. The film has won awards in New York including Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best First-Time Director and Best Historical Film. The Canary was shot throughout WA’s iconic bushland, outback and coastlines, and also upon the SS Leeuwin Ship, Brig Amity and in the Canola Fields.
