Our dentist referred us to the hospital pediatric dental specialist because Lexi's teeth are really bad! Her molars are rotten- literally! She needs multiple crowns with the goal of saving her molars until her adult molars come in. The dental specialist deals with pediatric cancer patients all the time, so he was well versed in what needed to be done. The 2.5 years of chemotherapy and steroids she took for her cancer ate away at the enamel of her teeth and made the dental tissue weak and very susceptible to cavities. So now all of Lexi's molars have major cavities and the teeth next to the molars have cavities as well. No amount of brushing and flossing and mouth washing was going to prevent this from happening, so at least we can stop worrying that this was cause by not doing a good enough job at oral care! The dental surgery is finally scheduled for July - she will undergo full sedation with anesthesia, and she's not too happy about that, but we will deal with that when it happens. Today was all about her 2 front bottom teeth. The adult teeth were coming in behind them and only one of them was loose enough to come out, so we were wondering if the other one needed pulled. We had the appointment scheduled in advance because they couldn't get us in for 3 weeks and at the time of scheduling both teeth needed to come out.
