(4 Feb 1998) Russian/Nat President Boris Yeltsin warned U-S President Bill Clinton on Wednesday that the U-S may provoke a world war if the Americans use force against Iraq. It was Russia's most critical statement so far concerning the possibility of a U-S strike against Iraq. Russia is against the use of force threatened by the United States and Britain and has tried to mediate, but with little success so far. Yeltsin stressed that Russia has done its utmost to avert a military clash. Moscow has been conducting feverish diplomacy in the Middle East in a bid to defuse the crisis. On Monday, the Kremlin announced a breakthrough in negotiations - a compromise that would permit inspection of eight disputed sites - only to have it denied by Baghdad hours later. TRANSCRIPTION OF SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Because of my close relationship with Clinton, Chirac, Helmut Kohl and others, I could play a big role. I have spoken on the phone, and I and other countries have sent envoys to negotiate. I have talked and everyone has sent a representative to deal with Hussein, there has also been ... from us. By his actions, Clinton might run into a world war. He is acting too loudly. Too loudly. Such weapons should be handled accurately. In the hands of terrorists they are very dangerous. And so to send planes and drop bombs - well, that's not at all like Clinton."
