Here's a short video tutorial on assessment and treatment for the extensor indicis. This muscle attaches to the ulna just under the head of the ulna bone and inserts to the head of the second metacarpal bone; it slips under the retinaculum as well. The trigger point lies about one or two finger widths under the head of the ulnar, loves to refer into the back of the wrist not into the fingers and is supplied by the deep radial nerve. I recently treated an archer athlete with classic back of hand dull aching making it hard to hold the bow back before letting the arrow go. So I sent a bit of time palpation most of the extensors until I found the trigger point in extensor indicis which reproduced their symptoms. This particular athlete had recently undertaken new hand and finger strength program which probably contributed to the situation. So keep it on your radar people. BE AWESOME AT WHAT YOU DO!
