They make one story become the only story." -Chimamanda Adiche Speakers Shireen Hamza is a PhD candidate in Harvard’s Department of the History of Science, interested in the history of science and medicine in the medieval Islamic world. Her research focuses on the history of tibb, or medicine, in the Indian Ocean world. She is a managing editor for the Ottoman History Podcast, and wrote and produced Ventricles, a podcast on science outside the West. Claire Sabel is pursuing a PhD in History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where she co-organizes the Science Beyond the West Group working group. She studies the relationship between the earth sciences and extractive industries, focusing on the Indian Ocean gem trade during the seventeenth century. Biopiracy: The unethical appropriation or commercial exploitation of biological materials, such as medicinal plants, that are native to a particular place without providing fair financial compensation to the people of that place who use them. White supremacy: The idea of the superiority of individuals and of societies originating from major colonial powers of Europe. Paradigm: A term coined by historian and philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn describing a prevailing intellectual consensus within scientific research.
