This lecture explores how the encounter between Greek reason and Christian revelation gave rise to a new philosophical tradition. Beginning with St. Paul’s proclamation of Christ crucified as the true wisdom of God, we trace how Christian thinkers surpassed the metaphysical limits of antiquity by grounding all being in the God who reveals Himself as “I Am.” The transition from ancient to medieval philosophy takes shape through the discovery that only God’s essence is identical with His existence, while all created beings receive existence as a gift. This insight becomes the cornerstone of medieval metaphysics and the foundation for the great philosophical systems of the Christian Middle Ages. Thesis Statement: Christian philosophy emerges when the Greek search for wisdom encounters the biblical revelation of God as pure Being, producing a transformative insight—the real distinction between essence and existence—that reorients the entire metaphysical landscape and becomes the foundation of medieval thought.
