They were skilled sailors, traders, warriors, and explorers who left an indelible mark on European and world history through their extensive voyages and settlements. The Vikings developed advanced shipbuilding techniques, creating longships that were both seaworthy and capable of navigating shallow rivers, allowing them to reach far inland territories. Their society was organized around kinship groups and chieftains, with a complex social hierarchy that included jarls (nobles), karls (free farmers), and thralls (slaves). They practiced a polytheistic religion centered on gods like Odin, Thor, and Freyja, with beliefs about Valhalla and Ragnarök that emphasized honor in battle and the cyclical nature of existence. Viking culture valued storytelling, with rich oral traditions that were later recorded in sagas and eddas that preserve their mythology, history, and heroic tales.
