By now you've probably heard about what's been coming out around Bethel Church, Shawn Bolz, and Bill Johnson. Mike Winger broke the story. Others have followed. There's been a public repentance service. Bill Johnson spoke. People have had a lot to say. But there's one thing I haven't heard anyone talk about — and it's the thing that stood out to me most when I watched Bill Johnson's portion of that service. It's not about charismatic theology. It's not about NAR apostleship (though we'll get there). It's not even about Sean Bowles specifically. It's about emotional health. And what a people-pleasing leader looks like when the lights come on. In this episode I walk through Bill Johnson's comments from the repentance service and try to name what's actually being revealed — not just about Bethel, but about all of us. Because the emotional unhealth that allowed Bill Johnson to look the other way is the same unhealth that shows up in quieter, less publicized ways in every church, every community, and every one of us. We also get into: • Why "I didn't want to believe it" is telling — and dangerous • The difference between mercy and people pleasing (they are not the same thing) • Why Jesus never extended mercy to someone who hadn't acknowledged their sin • The theology of apostleship and honor that created conditions for this kind of cover-up • What sweeping "forgive me for everything" confessions do and don't accomplish • What it looks like to actually pursue emotional health — not as a critique of others, but as a mirror for ourselves This is not a hit piece. I have genuine theological disagreements with Bill Johnson that go back over a decade. But the emotional health issues here transcend theology, denomination, and tradition. They show up in Anabaptist churches too. They've shown up in me. The question isn't whether we're perfect before we examine this. The question is whether our posture is one that actually wants to grow.
