When the engine is at speed, the blade is dislodged using the explosive, causing the engine to become unbalanced. The whole test is to see if the engine can stay contained within the outer casing and shroud. Note that the engine doesn't have to work after, it just has to stay within the containment. If the engine were to fail mid air shrapnel from the engine wouldn't enter the plane, protecting passengers and potentially saving the integrity of the plane. Also, please forgive me.
