After the successful landing of the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942, the campaign for control of the island between the U.S. and Japanese began. In an effort to take back Henderson Field, the Japanese landed the 28th Regiment under Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki to assult the Marine position from the east. This would culminate in a legendary battle on Guadalcanal that became known as The Battle of Alligator Creek.
