They are crammed into filthy cages, left to suffer from disease and malnutrition, and forced to watch other dogs being tortured and killed—living every day in terror until they die. The suffering is unimaginable. Dogs are packed in stacked cages so tight they cannot move or even lie down. They are given only small amounts of water and scraps of restaurant food gathered from garbage, and receive no medical care when they fall ill. Those who die in the cages are either ground into feed for the others or left where they lie. Born on these farms, many never feel grass under their paws beneath the sun, nor the gentle touch of a human hand before their final day in darkness and filth. Slaughter is even more brutal. Dogs are pinned down and beaten on the head with clubs, hung while still alive and skinned, thrown into boiling water, or burned over open flames—all while fully conscious. A baseless superstition—that the more the animal suffers and releases adrenaline, the meat becomes "more tender and flavorful"—has long been used to justify such torture. Even in countries with laws against it, the reality remains grim. In South Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam, the dog-meat trade is illegal, yet hidden farms and consumption persist. Meanwhile, in China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and India’s northeast, the sale of dog meat remains legal, and the few regulations that exist are rarely enforced. Amid this, South Korea took a historic step on January 9, 2024, passing legislation to ban the breeding, slaughter, sale, and distribution of dogs for meat. Farmers and vendors have been given a three-year transition period to move to other businesses, and full enforcement is scheduled by 2027. This proves that strong legal action can drive real change. Yet because the practice is rooted in long-standing food traditions, some people continue to eat dog meat, and rescuing dogs on the brink of slaughter remains urgent. The nonprofit K9 Global Rescue works to reduce this tragedy one life at a time, partnering with local activists and authorities to raid and close farms, provide emergency veterinary care, and transport rescued dogs to shelters and adoptive homes.
