Monday, October 13, 2025 Senator Hontiveros entered public service through the party-list system, representing Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party in the House of Representatives from 2004 to 2010. After two terms in the lower chamber, she sought a Senate seat, eventually winning election in 2016. She was re-elected to the Senate in 2022, continuing her service in the upper chamber. During her tenure, she has been associated with the passage of several national laws. These include the Mental Health Act of 2018 (Republic Act 11036), the Safe Spaces Act of 2019 (RA 11313), the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022 (RA 11861), and the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children Act of 2022 (RA 11930). In the Senate, she has held key leadership and committee positions. At the opening of the 20th Congress in July 2025, she chaired the Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality. Following a reorganization in September 2025, she was named Chair of the Committee on Health and Demography and appointed as a Deputy Majority Leader. In the Commission on Appointments, she was elected Minority Floor Leader in August 2025. Outside of her legislative work, Hontiveros has also received recognition from academic institutions. In 2023, Ateneo de Manila University conferred on her a Government Service Award as part of its Traditional University Awards. She continues to serve as senator under the Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party banner, remaining active in lawmaking and committee leadership in the 20th Congress.
