A Font and the Search for One Man's Fate - Carolyn Porter - ATypI 2017

During the depths of the Second World War, Frenchman Marcel Heuzé mailed letters to his wife and three daughters from a Nazi labor camp in Berlin. His letters, written in a beautiful, rolling script, were filled with brutal descriptions of life inside the camp alongside tender words for his loved ones back home in occupied France. 60 years later, Marcel’s letters were found in an antique store in Stillwater, Minnesota, and then transformed into a font that would proudly bear his name. While working on the font, the designer became obsessed with finding answers to these questions: Who was Marcel? Why had he been in Berlin? Did he survive to be reunited with his beloved wife and daughters? And why had his letters been for sale for a few dollars halfway around the world? As the result of the designer’s fervent quest for answers—a quest that consumed nearly a year and led to discoveries in archives in Germany and France—she made a series of unexpected connections. The presentation will include excerpts from the 2017 book Marcel’s Letters: A Font and the Search for One Man’s Fate.
