ARNISTON CASTLE is a classic strathspey which first appeared in the 1800's as a two-part tune titled JDK MacCallum's Strathspey but, by 1899, two additional parts had been added to the front of the tune now called Arniston Castle. Arniston House (or 'Castle') is a Georgian stately home in Midlothian, Scotland dating from the 1700's. This tune demonstrates the driving rhythm of the dot-cut or 'scotch snap' in the strathspey idiom and is recommended by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) for Grade 4 bands as part of a march-strathspey-reel (MSR) competition set.
