Due to technical difficulties, the beginning of this webinar was not recorded. John B. Kelly, New England Regional Director of Not Dead Yet (www.notdeadyet.org) and Director of Second Thoughts Massachusetts (www.second-thoughts.org) speaks about the impact of assisted suicide legislation on the disabled, black, Indigenous, and people of color. Peter Wolfgang, Executive Director of the Family Institute of Connecticut (www.ctfamily.org) speaks about some of the “dos and don’ts” of fighting assisted suicide legislation in your home state, in particular the need for reaching out to legislators, participating in rallies, and testifying. It can all make a difference! One of his tips is to stay away from the culture war—conflicts between polarized social groups, for example “pro-life” vs. “pro-choice”—it constrains your messaging. Peter also re-iterates some of the main arguments to make against assisted suicide: Elder abuse, the deadly mix with cost containment, misdiagnoses and incorrect prognoses, suicide contagion, and disability discrimination.
