Welcome to a very special episode of the Defying All Odds Podcast, recorded with the 50th and 52nd President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández at his foundation, The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development. He is a lawyer, academic, and politician who served as the President of the Dominican Republic from 1996 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2012. He also served as the President of the EU–LAC Foundation from 2016 to 2020 and was the President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations from 2018 to 2022. Dr. Leonel Fernández studied at Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) where he obtained his juris doctor degree with honors (magna cum laude) in 1978, receiving the J. Humberto Ducoudray award for being the top student in his class. President Fernández has been awarded honoris causa degrees by various renowned institutions of higher learning, including Harvard University (1999), Lehman College (2002), Stevens Institute of Technology (2004), and more! Born in Villa Juana, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Dr. Fernández moved to the Upper West Side when he was 8 years old. He had a passion for baseball and played apart of the Morningside Little League. As he grew older, he found he had a passion for politics and moved back to the Dominican Republic at the conclusion of his middle school years. Learning from his mentor Juan Bosch (former President of DR and Founder of PLD (Partido Liberación Dominicano)), Dr. Fernández became President in 1996 after spending over 25 years working with PLD. Dr. Fernández's administrations have focused much on technological and infrastructural development and macroeconomic and monetary stability with an emphasis on modernization. He has served as the party president of PLD from 2001 until his resignation on 20 October 2019 where he later founded the People's Force (Fuerza Del Pueblo) and ran for President of the Dominican Republic in both the 2020 and 2024 elections. In 2002, the former President founded The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization. The foundation aims to promote sustainable social, economic, democratic, and cultural development in the Dominican Republic and the Western Hemisphere. GFDD focuses on fostering global collaboration and exchange, enhancing public understanding, designing public policies, and offering capacity-building initiatives. The foundation also works to promote a better understanding and appreciation of Dominican culture, values, and heritage both in the Dominican Republic and internationally. Having participated at the World Leader's Forum at Columbia University in 2008, Dr. Leonel Fernández returned to Columbia University SIPA in November of 2024 to give a lecture on the political landscape of Latin America. Today, Dr. Leonel Fernández focuses on giving back to the youth, spreading his knowledge of international relations and politics, and connecting with Dominicans within the Dominican Republic and abroad.
