You've been stuck in traffic. I've been stuck in traffic. And you've more than likely witnessed someone on a motorcycle riding between lanes to avoid traffic. That's called lane splitting. And what might surprise you is that in California, lane splitting is perfectly legal. In fact, lane splitting itself has never been illegal. Most other states have laws against it. But here in California you are free to lane split. California sees more traffic than most of the US. Allowing motorcycles to lane split reduces traffic congestion. So that vehicles can get through and don't cause part of the traffic jam. Research suggests that lane splitting is safe as long as certain guidelines are followed. Even though lane splitting is legal, it is a common cause of motorcycle collisions. Aside from following regular traffic laws, there are guidelines to ensure everyone's safety. Motorcyclists should avoid being in a driver's blind spot. If lighting is poor and a larger vehicle is ahead, it may not be safe to lane split. Collisions between vehicles and motorcycles also occur when a motorcycle is lane splitting and a driver's changing lanes. Remember, keep your speed down so you can react if someone changes lanes quickly. Many drivers don't realize that lane splitting is legal and may try to block you from doing that, which is illegal on their part. Attorney Advertisement.
