Children of alcoholics spend a lot of their life suffering especially as adult children of alcoholics. ACOA trauma syndromes persist even long after the child becomes an adult. Having a parent who is an alcoholic and narcissist leaves damaging personality traits for acoa. It changes a child’s brain and keeps them stuck in a trauma response, fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. So what's normal for adult children of alcoholics is different than what's normal for children raised without alcoholic parents and persists long after the alcoholic parent is out of that child’s life and can lead to very damaging and toxic relationships in adulthood.
