SKA, the Square Kilometre Array, is a global science and engineering project to build the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope. The SKA will give astronomers insight into the formation and evolution of the first stars and galaxies after the Big Bang, the role of cosmic magnetism, the nature of gravity, and possibly even life beyond Earth. If history is any guide, the SKA will make many more discoveries than we can imagine today. The SKA will be the world's premier imaging and surveying telescope with a combination of unprecedented versatility and sensitivity that will open up new windows of discovery. An array of thousands of receptors will extend out to distances of 3,000 km from a central core region. The SKA will address fundamental unanswered questions about our Universe including how the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang, how galaxies have evolved since then, the role of magnetism in the cosmos, the nature of gravity, and the search for life beyond Earth. After nine-years of work by the South African and Australian SKA site bid teams, the independent SKA Site Advisory Committee (SSAC), composed of world-renowned experts, carried out an objective technical and scientific assessment of the sites in South Africa and Australia, and identified by consensus Africa as the preferred site. About 70-80% of the project will be based in South Africa and other African countries, the balance will be in Australia The MeerKAT array, currently taking shape in South Africa's Karoo region, is a world-class radio telescope designed to do ground-breaking science. It will be the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the southern hemisphere until the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is completed around 2024.
