Michigan GLWA Releases 120 Inch PCCP Water Main Break Final Report - February 2023 - Great Job!

GLWA 120-INCH PCCP WATER MAIN BREAK FINAL REPORT RELEASED February 10, 2023 RATE PAYER TRANSPARENCY MODEL FOR THE ENTIRE WATER WORKS INDUSTRY! ________ GLWA’s engineering and inspection consultants have determined that the cause of the break was damage to the mortar casing covering the Prestressed Concrete Pressure Pipe (PCCP), which resulted in corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement of the pipe’s interior wires. Cause of the mortar damage is unknown, however a ditch between fields located directly above the break location could have created an environment that was detrimental to the mortar casing. _______________________ Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) discovered a failure on a 120-inch water transmission main that distributes finished drinking water from its Lake Huron Water Treatment Facility to communities in the northern part of GLWA’s drinking water service area. The 120-inch transmission main is the largest in the regional water distribution system. This video tells the story from the information the Engineering Staff and Senior Management has provided with press releases and the Final Report. The Flint crisis most certainly has forced utilities in the State of Michigan to be transparent providing facts to the rate payers....Actually above average for any large Diameter Water Main Break.......Hopefully more large utilities will start providing information as GLWA is sharing...this actually is very historical a new beginning to be perfectly honest. Most designs do not include logic in many categories including how to maintain large diameter transmission mains or pipes or provide flushing SOP to meet industry standards based on the volume required starting perhaps at 12 Inch Diameter. Property Damage and Environment Considerations is a major factor based on the extreme volume and flow required to scour any large pipe, astronomical is the buzz word of the day. Senior Management Hit a Home Run! Again I have been trend plotting and analyzing water main breaks since in 1980's. From my experience most engineers or senior management do not want to provide this type of detail information. Again Great job GLWA!!
