Although Augustine is most often read through the lens of Greek philosophy and the theology of Christian writers, some of the thinkers who most significantly shaped Augustine’s intellectual development were Romans, and they shaped his ideas about slavery, and in turn about law, rule, accountability, and citizenship, according to Toni Alimi, assistant professor in the Department of Classics. In a live, hybrid Chats in the Stacks book talk Alimi will discuss his new book, Slaves of God: Augustine and Other Romans on Religion and Politics (Princeton University Press, 2024) which breaks ground on the topic of slavery in late antique and medieval political thought while also shedding new light on Augustinianism’s complicity in Christianity’s long entanglement with slavery.
