In 2003 I decided to quit my so called "The Lab"-concert-programming activities in my hometown Nijmegen for the organisation "Het Muziekenhuis" (goal: stimulate all kinds of contemporary music, be it rock, jazz improvised or modern classical) to move on to other occupations. Format of "The Lab" concerts was to invite & combine players of different backgrounds for 1 concert and with 1 afternoon of getting to know eachother & rehearsals. I wanted to finish my stint as organiser with a very special concert. At some moment in the beginning of 2003 I heard that MIKE KENEALLY, 'stuntguitarplayer' of Frank Zappa's last band, was going to be in Holland in june for at least one project (involvement in a special guitar-program in the Holland Festival of that year), and because I have an excellent contact with Co de Kloet jr who was a longtime personal friend of Frank Zappa it was possible for me to get in touch with Mike and his manager. I knew immediately that it would be great to team up Mike with 2 outstanding musicians from Nijmegen who are in his league as players (they absolutely deserve much wider international regognition!) PIETER DOUMA & RENÉ CREEMERS, and to try to combine them with the Dutch master on the six strings he is still (it is 2015 now) chosen as best guitarplayer of the world in guitarmagazines!-: JAN AKKERMAN. At that point -to be honest I didn't know that Jan was a major influence on Mike when he started playing guitar, but what I did know through interviews is that Jan respected Zappa a lot and liked his music, so I presumed there was enough common ground amongst these 2 virtuoso's to try to get them together for 1 "Lab"-gig. I went to work. And succeeded! With the help of Co and his willingness to record the concert for later broadcast on Dutch public radio. Well what is there to say about that 10th of june 2003? The musicians met eachother for the very first time that afternoon. Jan was the last one to arrive, and he came straight from I think Ireland where he had played a gig the night before. Because of his trip back to Holland he hadn't slept at all, so he was also a little tired in the beginning of his presence in Nijmegen (I remember that in between rehearsals he laid down on a chair or whatever there was to lay down on a couple of times for half an hour or so to get a little rest). But he and the others were all in great spirit, and the (musical) connection was there right from the start. They discussed what they could play that evening, and went shortly through songs that they chose to do. After that we had dinner together and was it possible to exchange a lot of personal anecdotes & experiences of the Zappa and Focus days. We had a great time. Fortunately (but not unexpected of course) the house was sold out! It was my task to introduce the concert, tell the audience a little bit about the musicians and the formula of the "Lab"-concerts, and invite Mike on stage to start the evening off with a short solo-part. Later he would be accompanied by Pieter and René for the second part of the first set. After a break Jan would do a sologuitar part and then the four of them would do a long second set. Of course I had my homevideocamera with me to film the performance. It was only a few weeks ago (february 2015) that I asked Co if he would send me the audio-recordings because I was doing a television portrait of Pieter and thought it would be nice to edit a part of this great and legendary concert (in Nijmegen people are still talking about it!) in that program, and even though this meant he had to dive deep in his extensive archive Co was so kind to do that. So, being in possesion of these recordings now made it also possible of course to edit the entire concert for publication on You Tube. In this clip you see the first part of the collective set of Mike, Jan, Pieter and René. Hope you like it!
